What Data We Collect

We collect the following categories of personal data:

Account data

When you create an account, we collect your email address and display name. We use this to identify you, manage your account, and communicate with you about your account.

Discovery and preference data

When you complete the fragrance discovery, we collect your answers — including preferred occasions, scent families, intensity preferences, and budget range. We use this to generate personalized fragrance recommendations.

Usage data

We collect anonymized usage data such as pages visited and features used, using self-hosted Umami analytics. Umami does not use cookies, does not collect personal data (no IP addresses, device fingerprints, or cross-site tracking), and is hosted on our own EU-based servers. No data is shared with third parties.

Cookies

We use the following types of cookies:

• Strictly necessary — session cookie (keeps you signed in) and CSRF cookie (protects against cross-site request forgery). These cannot be disabled.
• Analytics — our analytics tool (Umami) is fully cookieless. No analytics cookies are set on your device.
• Marketing & affiliates (opt-in) — affiliate networks may set cookies to track referrals when you click outbound retailer links.

You can manage your cookie preferences at any time via the "Cookie Settings" link in the footer of every page.

Why We Collect It

We process your data under the following legal bases (GDPR Article 6(1)):

• Contract performance (Art. 6(1)(b)) — processing your account and discovery data is necessary to provide the service you signed up for (personalized recommendations, watchlists, price alerts).
• Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) — anonymized usage data helps us improve the service. Our legitimate interest does not override your privacy rights.

Affiliate Links and Tracking

ScentHunt earns revenue through affiliate partnerships with retailers. When you click an outbound link to a retailer, the URL may contain affiliate tracking parameters that identify ScentHunt as the referral source.

The retailer may set their own cookies on your device to track the referral. These cookies are governed by the retailer's own privacy policy, not ours. We do not share any of your personal data (email, name, discovery answers) with affiliate networks or retailers — the only information transmitted is that a click originated from ScentHunt.

Data Retention

• Account data — retained for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your data is permanently removed within 30 days.
• Discovery sessions — retained for up to 12 months to allow you to revisit and refine your recommendations. You can delete discovery sessions from your account at any time.

Your Rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

• Right of access (Art. 15) — request a copy of the data we hold about you
• Right to rectification (Art. 16) — correct inaccurate data
• Right to erasure (Art. 17) — request deletion of your data
• Right to data portability (Art. 20) — receive your data in a machine-readable format
• Right to object (Art. 21) — object to processing based on legitimate interest
• Right to restriction (Art. 18) — restrict how we process your data

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) at autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl.

Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), secure password hashing, and access controls. Your data is stored on servers located in the European Union.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email (if you have an account) at least 30 days before the changes take effect. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
